BET Awards 09: Could it get any worse? Of course it can..

I promised myself with all that I had that I would not talk or blog about the BET Awards. Obviously, I couldn't help myself.

Short, sweet and to the point: the show sucked. Deborah said they put the "new" show together in a matter of 3-4 days but it looked like it was done in 3-4 hours! I have never ever ever ever seen an award show like that! They weren't announcing the nominees, they would just get up and go "....the winner is" and giving two awards at a time. The show literally looked like the final rehearsal, not something that was ready for LIVE public viewing!

New Edition opened the show. I don't know if I'm willing to give them a pass because it was such short notice or what but they sounded horrible. In 3 days, you can get your vocals at least half way up to par and it's not like they haven't been performing because they were just here not too long ago. So the excuse that I've been hearing NE fans use of "oh, they literally put this together in days" doesn't fly with me. They've been hitting the stage recently and it should have been NO reason why Ralph Tresvant sounded like a sick kitten. Absolutely none! Then Bobby Brown doing the whole tongue thing?? I don't remember the Jackson 5 doing that LOL. On to the next...

Everyone knows that I love me some Keri Hilson. She's been holding it down in the game for some time now as a writer and composer but I think her performance was not all that great. She needs to work desperately on her dancing and singing combo cause that didn't work out for her! She looked very nice though. Kudos to her for that.

Ciara came out and attemtped to do a ballad and it didn't work..go figure. I love Ci-Ci though! Drake's performance was dull but I heard he pulled his ACL which is why he performed sitting on a stool. Why didn't he just go get a wheelchair like the character he played in Degrassi? Tiny and Toya -- America's favorite 2LH (2 Little Hoodrats) were there and Tiny accepted an award on TI's behalf. The only thing I'll say is "a mind is a terrible thing to waste ." Beyonce sounded really good but the song and her outfit was out of place for what was going on. And Jamie Foxx was the only award show that I had ever seen who could host, win an award and perform 3 times!

There was no "tribute." I'm convinced that Deborah and Stephen Hill used that as an excuse for the fuckery they were about to let go on television. They didn't tribute Mike at all and if I were part of the Jackson family, I'd be pissing all on those executives for that! A tribute would've been talented artists who were directly influenced by MJ's work. NeYo came out and did "The Lady In My Life" and sounded amazing but I still think (and yall can hate me all day) that Chris Brown should've been added and Ciara -- instead of singing -- do a bad ass dance set. That would've been perfect. The original word was that CB was gonna do the tribute along with NeYo but now people are saying JayZ pulled the plug. If that did happen, Jigga lost major cool points with me and yall know I love some S.Carter! Just because you were screwing the chick he hit doesn't give you reason to block. We all know what he did was wrong and he knows that. He's been forgiven and now it's time to move on!! I do not condone putting your hands on a woman (see my Domestic Violence post) but geez Louise! They didn't want CB performing because of his recent case BUT we'll let dope dealers and convicted felons perform all day. Jay Z used to sell dope and remember when he had that whole court case thing for stabbing Un? Or wait, Lil Wayne performed and TI will probably open next year. But that's all for another post!! Don't wanna step on anyone's toes!

Even with the tomfoolery that went on, there were some very good highlights of that show. For starters, NeYo sent chills down my entire body when he did "The Lady In My Life." He's so amazing as a singer, writer, composer. One of the few talented artists left. I was on Twitter and read a comment saying that NeYo's whole career is a tribute to Mike and that is beyond true. Check him out:

Then there was TEVIN CAMPBELL (no, your eyes do not decieve you!) doing the tribute to the O'Jays. Trey Songz, Johnny Gill and Tyrese did an amazing job as the "young O'Jays." Of course O'Jays were on point!

Can't forget about the moment that sealed the deal...Janet coming out and thanking the fans. She was visibly hurt and what can we say? This is her brother!! At this moment, the tears started!

Maxwell did the beautiful song "Pretty Wings". At the end of the performance he goes "Michael, fly with your pretty wings". It was so fitting and appropriate.

Jamie and NeYo closed the show out with "I'll Be There" and did a wonderful job.

Okay, that's it. I've seen better from BET. They have to do better. I'm convinced that this was just something to hold us over and that Stephen Hill is working on something amazing and spectacular for Mike....that's my story and I'm sticking to it! They have to come back and rectify this because MTV is probably already preparing something and they're gonna piss on BET LOL. BET has something great coming. They have too!! I believe in my people.

And if you want to know why I support the idea of Chris Brown doing a tribute is not because I support women beaters or I think he's a cute little yella boy but because his career is influenced by Mike. Also because of his 2006 MTV performance of Thriller.

In the words of Don Cornelius, "...and you can bet your last money, it's gonna be a stone gas honey!......as always in parting, I wish you love peace and soooooooul."

  1. This was the worst awards show I have ever seen. I've been disappointed in BET for a long time, but this tops it. Can they get any worse???
